形态描述：茎丛生，高3-4米或更高，直径2.5-4厘米，具明显的环状叶痕。叶羽状全裂，长1米或更长，约17对羽片，顶端1对合生，羽片长35-60厘米或更长，宽4.5-6.5厘米，具2-6条肋脉，下部和中部的羽片披针形，镰刀状渐尖，上部及顶端羽片较短而稍钝，具齿裂；叶柄长10厘米或更长。佛焰苞1个，革质，压扁，光滑，长30厘米或更长，开花后脱落。花序和花与槟榔相似，但雄花更小，只有3枚雄蕊。果实比槟榔小，卵状纺锤形，长3.5厘米，直径1.5厘米，顶端变狭，具小乳头状突起，果熟时由黄色变为深红色。种子椭圆形至倒卵球形，长1.5-1.8厘米，直径1-1.2厘米，胚乳嚼烂状，几无涩味，胚基生。果期8-9月。
